Born in 1935 to the late Joseph Cassar and late Mary Agius, Helen, better known as Nellie, lived a relatively uneventful life. As a child she had already exhibited a flair for painting but this talent was never recognised. Later on in her life, well after she got married to Vincent and brought up her two sons Mark and Pierre, driven by her life-long desire to paint, she decided to get herself some oil colours, a few paint brushes and a meter of canvas, the least she could buy from a popular art shop in Valletta! Without any formal training, she proceeded to translate her inborn talent into stunning works of art. Here is a gallery of her paintings. Nellie's magnificent works are almost exclusively oil on canvas. Although most of her output comprises reproductions of master paintings, she did produced a few original works. Despite the encouragement she received on several occasions by local art connoisseurs to exhibit her works in public, she has consistently refrained from doing so and would refuse to sell any of the many paintings she has so painstakingly created.
